Darwin to Kununurra
Hello everybody, It's been about 6 weeks since I posted a blog. This was due to us being stuck in Darwin, whilst we waited for caravan repairs. So there wasn't a lot to report. We left Darwin on Tuesday the 29th of June, & drove to Jabiru, which is in Kakadu National Park. We spent 3 nights there & saw a lot of Aborigional rock art, a great cultural centre, & did a tour of the "Ranger Uranium Mine". We then travelled to Cooinda,(Kakadu), where we went on the Yellow Water cruise, & did a long tour called "Animal Tracks". Both tours were great. We saw crocodiles, goannas, buffalo, turkey geese, dingos, & a huge variety of birds. We also learned how to dig for bush potatos, we ate green tree ants,(yum, yum), and had tea cooked in a fire. tea was barrumundi & damper & potatos, & of course billy tea. We were lucky enough to see 2 dingos hunting a wallaby, & we were also very lucky to have had a guide as good as he was. WE were at Cooinda for 2 nights & then we drove on to Katherine. On the way, we passed through a town called Pine Creek & the racecourse railings had big termite mounds growing around them. Soon after Pine Creek we heard a call for help over the uhf radio. It was a family who had run out of fuel. Luckily we had a 20 litre gerry-can full & were able to help them out.We stayed 5 nights in Katherine at the Low Level park, & it was a beautiful place & very friendly. We went on an early morning cruise of Katherine gorges 1 & 2. It was fabulous. I also swam in the river near the Low Level weir & wasn't eaten by crocodiles. WE left Katherine on Friday morning to head toward Kununurra. Our first stop was in the "Gregory National Park" at the Sullivan Campground. It was very basic in a bush setting. $3.30/night. Had a great evening with other travellers, who all had many travelling stories to tell. The next day was onto "Timber Creek" for a night in a caravan park, & on Sunday night we stayed in another bush camp called "Saddle Creek". The people next to us had a huge bus (22 tons) that had everything that opened & shut. He even had a car that was kept in the cargo area. It was on a platform operated by hydraulic rams, so when the side door was opened, the car came out sideways, then other rams tilted the platform & the car could be driven off. The driving position was very high & gave the impression of the cockpit of a plane. We arrived in Kununurra on Monday morning at the same time we left Saddle Creek. Sounds impressive, but we had to put our clocks back by an hour & a half.
