G'day,
Wev'e had a lovely time here at Alice Springs. It's a very modern town nestled between the West Macdonnell Ranges & the East Macdonnell Ranges. It started off as a major telegraph repeater station, and was called "Stuart", until 1933 when it was renamed Alice Springs. Whilst here, we spent a day in the West Macdonnell Ranges & walked through some beautiful gorges & saw beautiful scenery. We spent a day in the "Desert Park", & that was a very imformative & enjoyable day. One day we spent a day in the East Macdonnell Ranges, & drove to an old ghost town called "Arltunga". The road started out as a good dirt road, & gradually deteriated to a lousy 4 wheel drive track. Although the road was poor, the scenery was magnificent. This place is diverse & a surprise in the middle of desert. We have also visited the old telegraph office, which was actually a village, & the flying doctor centre, & dined out with friends a couple of times. Tomorrow, we will be driving to "Gemtree", which is about 145K north east of here. We will stay for a couple of days & do a bit of fossicking for Garnets & Zircons.
Love to you all , Avril & Doug.

Hello all,
We left Erldunda on Monday 6/4/2009. On our way, we saw a very large rock, called Mount Connor, which is considerably bigger than Ayre's Rock. We stopped on the way at Curtain Springs for coffee. This is a working cattle station, that makes the most out of tourism. A good place to stop, but very expensive. We stayed at Ayre's Rock for 2 days & whilst there, went to watch the rock at sunset, Drove around it, went to the interprative centre, & spent some time in the "Olgas".We found the Olgas more interesting. Drove to Kings Canyon on Wednesday, where we stayed for 2 nights. We can't get over oll the lush foliage in the area. This area is classified as semi-desert, & looks fabulous with the red sand & greens & yellows. The highlight of King's Canyon was a helicopter flight over the area. It gives you a totally different perspective on the area.We drove back to Erldunda on Good Friday. A somewhat tense trip as Avril did her first drive with the caravan in tow. Actually she did O.K.but I have aged somewhat. On Easter Saturday, we drove to Alice Springs & saw a few dead kangaroos on the side of the road being eaten by very big wedge tail eagles. When the eagles fly off, just before you get to them, they are slow and look huge as you just miss them. The weather has been excellent with the temperature being in the low 30's. We will be here for about 2 weeks as there is a lot to see, & it will give us time to get the fridge repaired. It stopped working on 240v power 4 weeks out of warranty.
I'll write when we leave Alice Springs.
Love to you all,
Avril & Doug.

Woomera to Erldunda
Hello everyone,
Whilst in Roxby Downs, we visited Andamooka. Although a bit dumpy, the people were very friendly & it was an interesting place. In one of the pictures that I posted, you will see a washing machine, a clothes line & an ironing board on the side of the road. This is very much the outback Australian humour. After leaving Roxby Downs we drove to Glendambo & spent Monday night there. It had obviously been a great place to stay at one time, but now it is very run down, & the ablutions were poor. On Tuesday Morning, we drove to Coober Pedy, & booked in for 3 nights. We had a wonderful time there, & learned a lot about Opals & Mining. I bought Avril's 70th birthdat present there, but she can't have it until the 3rd of September. On Wednesday afternoon, we droveout of town, & along the "Dog Fence" to the Breakaway Range.
It was in this area that Mad Max & Beyond Thunderdome were filmed. We were at one of the lookouts for sunset, where set up table & chairs, sparkling shiraz, olives, cheese & biscuits, & watched the sunset over the hills. It was beautiful & very romantic, & hard to keep Avril in line. The drive home was very dark, on dirt roads, & I hoped we were on the right road. Luckily we were. WE left on Friday morning, & drove to Marla. Not a bad place to stop overnight, but the ablutions were putrid. Would give it a miss next time. We are now at Erldunda, which is at the intersection of the Stuart Highway & Lassiters Highway. This is an oasis in the desert. We will be here saturday & Sunday nights before heading out to Eyre's Rock.
Love to you all,
Doug & Avril.
